Cannabidiol (CBD) works in your pet’s body through interaction with its endocannabinoid system (ECS). The system is a network of cellular receptors that help regulate body functions such as mood, pain, appetite, inflammation and stress levels. Shortly after consumption, CBD activates the ECS receptors and helps regulate body temperature, reduce pain and inflammation, and increase dopamine secretion, which produces antidepressant effects.
How Does the Endocannabinoid System Work?
The endocannabinoid system functions the same way in people as it does in our pets. The system is stimulated by endocannabinoids produced in the body when needed to help modulate the brain, immune system and endocrine system and maintain the body’s natural balance. The ECS also regulates inflammation, which is the body’s natural response to damaged tissue or infection. When not controlled properly, inflammation may lead to pain and chronic conditions.
The endocannabinoid system in pets influences activity in the gastrointestinal tract and affects areas of the central nervous system responsible for appetite. The ECS also appears to help regulate hormones related to the body’s response to stress.
What are Cannabinoid Receptors?
The two major cannabinoid receptors in the endocannabinoid system are CB1 and CB2.
These receptors are located on the cells’ surface and transmit what they detect to the inside of the cell, and trigger the appropriate cellular response.
CB1 receptors are located throughout the body but are more concentrated in the spinal cord and the brain. They control certain behaviors such as appetite, emotions and memory.
CB2 receptors are found in the nervous and immune systems, where they help regulate inflammation and are known to respond to the therapeutic effects of CBD.
How do Cannabinoids Work?
Cannabinoids are natural compounds found in the cannabis plant. THC is the psychoactive cannabinoid that is responsible for the “high” feeling. Cannabidiol (CBD) is a non-psychoactive compound that can relieve pain and reduce inflammation without the psychoactive effects of THC.
External cannabinoids, including non-psychoactive CBD, can stimulate the body’s endocannabinoid system and trigger the same therapeutic benefits that internally produced endocannabinoids would. When the endocannabinoid system is stimulated by external cannabinoids, it helps moderate the body’s immune response and reduce inflammation.
How Does CBD Affect Pets?
CBD stimulates activity in both CB1 and CB2 receptors by triggering the release of natural endocannabinoids throughout the entire body. CBD also slows the natural breakdown of endocannabinoids, which prolongs the therapeutic effect.
CBD is a non-psychoactive cannabis hemp plant extract that does not cause a “high” feeling in pets.
